Two For Tuesday March 24, 2008

  1. It sucks being diabetic and being forced to walk through a gauntlet of candy and chocolate covered pretzels to pick up my test strips and Metforman prescription at the local Walgreen's. And not only are they tempting me with sweets that will kill me, but they sell cigarettes behind the counter.... what the heck kind of Pharmacy are these guys running..... someday we will find out that they are keeping the pseudoephedrine behind the counter because that's where they cook the meth not because the government says it is required.
  2. For as long as the money lasts, the local Social Services office is paying utility bills for individuals who have received a cutoff notice's from their utility company. The requirement is that you have relieved a cutoff notice because of failure to pay. Those of you who have been doing the right thing and paying your utility bills first and shorting your grocery budget are just screwed. It doesn't matter how much money you are working with it is all about how badly you budget it. The moral of the story is: Sign up for cable tv, go to the rental store and get you a big honkin flat screen and buy up all the steaks at the grocery store cause the village is paying your utility bill........... this country is doomed.

The cigarettes thing blows me away. I was consultant to a fellow in opening two pharmacies up here. It simply wasn't economically feasible for him to not sell them. I give the man credit; he tried. He did many other things out of decency and a sense of his mission as a pharmacist that weren't required, let alone easy. Like a public restroom-he thought any place selling medicines to sick people should be required to have one for their comfort. I had never noticed that the big chains didn't provide them. Oy! Try that when sprinting for your immodium.

I suspect our politics are pretty different, Randy, but I really enjoy your writing
