Doing my part to derail early childhood development.

It was a thirteen hour workday today. Lots to do. At one point I got the chance to read to a room full of sixth graders. It was more about interaction than the message contained within the book. Although the message of the first book was actually relevant. It was about how one voice matters. And at the same time how we must all work together to accomplish our goals.

The books both seemed a little young for the audience but I think they liked the idea that someone took the time to visit. And I wasn't about to read the Iliad or War And Peace. I want to do my part but let's be serious this was the first time I have read aloud since my kids were small. Luckily the kids didn't have their own copy because I ad-libbed a bit.

Ok .... so what if one of the books was 'Horton Hears a Who" by Dr. Seuss... 1954 I enjoyed it but Seuss is hard to read aloud. It's much easier to just tell it. At least that's the story I'm sticking to. Just for the record "kangaroo" doesn't really rhyme with any other word in the book. The good Doctor put it in there just to make me chew on my tongue. But reading it to the kids made me feel good in a warm, fuzzy kind of way. I was helping to mold the future.

The other book was "Show and Tell"  by Robert N. Munsch, about a boy (Benjamin) that took his baby sister to school in a knapsack for show and tell. At one point they call in a doctor to make the baby be quiet and the doc starts saying the baby "needs a needle" she starts pulling out larger and larger needles but they never are "large enough" until finally she pulls out an "enormous needle" and the baby sees it and screams even louder. Finally the mother shows up to save the baby but then Ben asks if he can tote the baby home in the knapsack and his mom says sure.

What the.....?

Today I taught the children that one voice makes a difference unless the powers that be don't like that voice, at which time they threaten it with large needles. Oh... and I also helped to instill in America's youth that it is a proper parenting practice to carry your baby around in a knapsack......

I feel so much better when I know I have been part of the solution.

If I read to your children today...... I'm sorry.
