Long Road Out Of MTV

I was going to spend this post trashing the music of today's MTV top whatever.
But I would be whistling in the wind. I am not going to convince the world that what is being "sold" on MTV now is little more than a joke. It's as if the performers, producers, record company execs and the reviewing press have gotten together and decided to play a game of The Emperor's New Clothes .
They just want to see how poorly written and offending the lyrics can be, how non-musically the music can be written (if it is even actually written down) and recorded, how poorly it can be preformed live and then just sit back and see how long it will take before someone says:

"The band/group/singer can't perform/play/sing their way out of a wet paper bag. Get off our stage, get off our television, get off our radio you, no talent, HACKS. You will not get another dime of our money."

I'm saying it, I'm yelling it from the roof tops but I'm almost 50 and the powers that be don't care what us old folks think.

Until someone with more clout than me starts saying it we can only expect the vast majority of what is passed off as music to get worse.

This isn't just the ranting of another over the hill guy that doesn't like the music the "kids" are listening to now days. In the 60's my grandparents and parents thought "our" music was of the devil and would be the downfall of all things musical but they were offended because it was different, not because it was poorly written, they just didn't like it because it was different.

My problem with most of today's music isn't that it is different. I listen to many different types of music. Some that I would never have thought to listen to in my youth. My problem is that the vast majority of "popular" music today is conceived, and preformed by individual with absolutely no talent.

Some of them can write words down on paper. But they would not know the first thing about writing the music down, understanding the concept of melody and they sure as heck can't read music. There is absolutely no thought or true feeling contained within the lyrics.

Ok, now I'm done "not" bashing today's music.

What I really wanted to do is to beg each of you to buy good music. I don't care what type of good music it is... just buy the good stuff. The stuff that is melodic, the stuff that inspires. Buy the positive music that is on the shelves. Support the advertisers that support the programs that support the good musicians.

I submit to you simply as an example the following two songs. Don't worry about the actual music that would accompany the lyrics. Simply read the lyrics.

They could both be rap songs, they could both be rock songs, they could both be country songs,..... wait... they couldn't both be country songs because there is no jilted girlfriend bashing some guys pickem-up truck with a ball bat. And nobody's dog died. But they could be most any other type of music.

The first is the kind of swill they are turning out that will be purchased by sheeple who have been told it is good, well thought out music and that it is the "popular" music of the day. The only positive impact this song will have is on the bank accounts of the sellers.

The second is a song that each of us should listen to, a song that speaks to and for millions of people in this country and overseas. It could have a positive impact on the lives of people everywhere.
Support the Good Music.

This is bad........

With You
I need you boo
I gotta see you boo
And there's hearts all over the world tonight
Said there's hearts all over the world tonight
I need you boo
I gotta see you boo
And there's hearts all over the world tonight
Said there's hearts all over the world tonight
Hey lil mama, ooh you're a stunner
Hot little figure, yes you a winner, and
I'm so glad to be yours
You're a class of your own and
Ooh little cutie, when you talk to me
I swear the whole world stops
You're my sweetheart and
I'm so glad that you're mine
You are one of a kind, and
You mean to me what I mean to you
And together baby there is nothing we won't do
'Cause if I got you
I don't need money
I don't need cars
Girl you're my heart
And oh, I'm into you and
Girl no one else would do
With every kiss and every hug
You make me fall in love
And now I know I can't be the only one
I bet there's hearts all over the world tonight
With the love of their life who feel
What I feel when I'm with you, with you, with you, with you, with you... girl
With you, with you, with you, with you, with you... Oh girl
I don't want nobody else
Without you there's no
one left, and
You're like Jordans on Saturday
I gotta have you and I cannot wait now
Hey lil shorty, say you care for me
You know I care for you
You know that I will be true
You know that I won't lie
You know that I will try
Be your everything
'Cause if I got you
I don't need money
I don't need cars
Girl you're my heart
Oh, I'm into you and
Girl no one else would do
With every kiss and every hug
You make me fall in love
And now I know I can't be the only one
I bet there's hearts all over the world tonight
With the love of their life who feel
What I feel when I'm with you, with you, with you, with you, with you... ohhh
With you, with you, with you, with you, with you... Yeah
And I will never try
To deny that you are my whole life
'Cause if you ever let me go
I would die so I won't run
I don't need another woman
I just need you or nothing
'Cause if I got that
Then I'll be straight
Baby you're the best part of my day
I need you boo
I gotta see you boo
And there's hearts all over the world tonight
Said there's hearts all over the world tonight
They need their boo
They gotta see their boo
Said there's hearts all over the world tonight
Hearts all over the world tonight
And oh, I'm into you and
Girl no one else would do
With every kiss and every hug
You make me fall in love
And now I know I can't be the only one
I bet there's hearts all over the world tonight
With the love of their life who feel
What I feel when I'm with you, with you, with you, with you, with you... ohhh(girl)
With you, with you, with you, with you, with you... ohhh
With you, with you, with you, with you, with you...
With you, with you, with you, with you, with you...
Baby yeah

This is good...... but I really didn't need to tell you that. It will be quite evident when you finish reading.

Long Road Out Of Eden
Moon shining down through the palms
shadows moving on the sand.
Somebody whispering the twenty-third psalm
dusty rifle in his trembling hands.
Somebody trying just to stay alive.
He got promises to keep
over the ocean in America
far away and fast asleep.
Silent stars blinking in the blackness of an endless sky,
cold silver satellites, ghostly caravans passing by.
Galaxies unfolding, new worlds being born.
Pilgrims and prodigals creeping toward the dawn.
But it's a long road out of Eden.
Music blasting from an SUV
on a bright and sunny day,
rolling down the interstate
in the good ol' USA.
Having lunch at the petroleum club.
Smokin' fine cigars and swappin' lives.
He said: "Gimme 'nother slice o' that barbecued brisket!"
"Gimme ‘nother piece o' that pecan pie!"
Freeways flickering, cell phones chiming a tune.
We're riding to utopia, road map says we'll be arriving soon.
Captains of the old order clinging to the reins,
assuring us these aches inside are only growing pains.
But it's a long road out of Eden.
Back home I was so certain.
The path was very clear.
But now i have to wonder: “What are we doing here?”
I'm not counting on tomorrow
and I can't tell wrong from right.
But I'd give anything to be there in your arms tonight.
Weaving down the American highway
through the litter and the wreckage and the cultural junk.
Bloated with entitlement, loaded on propaganda
and now we're driving dazed and drunk.
Been down the road to Damascus,
the road to Mandalay.
Met the ghost of Caesar on the Appian Way.
He said, "It's hard to stop this bingeing, once you get a taste."
"But the road to empire is a bloody stupid waste."
Behold the bitten apple - the power of the tools.
But all the knowledge in the world is of no use to fools.
And it's a long road out of Eden....
